About
I’ve been writing JavaScript for 20 years. The longest stretch, 9 years, went into one data-analysis app for the automotive industry. I started it from the first line and left it at 250,000 lines of code and thousands of users.
Along the way I led a team, hired developers and taught people who were moving into IT. These days I help companies that keep large frontend apps running for years.
Nine years with one app
The company started as a startup and grew to serve several automotive firms. I was a developer and a scrum master, helped the testers and led bigger features. The team grew fast, so a lot of my time went into retros, sprint planning, documentation and talking with designers.
The hardest part was the data-analysis module, with our own spreadsheet, a bit like Excel, that handled hundreds of thousands of rows. I also wrote the grammar, lexer, parser and compiler for the company’s DSL, moved the build from Grunt and require.js to webpack, and built a code generator.
I also helped the PM work with an outside team: I consulted on the API and architecture and reviewed their work.
What I do
- architecture of large single-page apps that live for years
- UI performance with a lot of data
- tooling: webpack, code generators, parsers, DSLs
- code review and team standards
- technical hiring, onboarding and teaching juniors
- working with AI agents: context and prompts
Technologies
Day to day: JavaScript, TypeScript, React, Vue, Node.js, Astro.
Earlier: jQuery, Backbone.js, Angular, Electron, PHP, C#, Java, Perl, Delphi.
After hours
I have about 80 repositories on GitHub, mostly small tools I needed myself. There’s a daily routine board for the family that runs on a TV, and a grammar editor for the nearley parser, among others. Have a look at my GitHub.
Away from the computer I grow tomatoes, play the piano and go to the mountains. If it weren’t for IT, I’d probably be an architect or a gardener.
